Today is International Literacy Day.

International Literacy Day was established to raise awareness of the value of literacy among people and communities. The State Literacy Day festivities were launched in Thiruvananthapuram by Education Minister V. Sivankutty under the direction of the State Literacy Commission Authority. Promoting literacy for a world in transition: laying the groundwork for sustainable and peaceful societies will be the focus of International Literacy Day in 2023. The celebration of the day was requested by the Conference of Ministers of Education of the UNESCO Member States in Tehran in 1965 to highlight the significance of educating the illiterate.

The idea put forth by UNESCO is to observe this day up until there is still at least one illiterate person on the planet.
