The death toll from Storm Daniel in eastern Libya has surpassed 11,000 people. The failure of dams in the highlands produced a double calamity in the port city of Derna. Last night, over 3,000 bodies were burned. Day and night searches among the collapsed structures are continuing with the assistance of helicopters.
Thousands more people are thought to be trapped in the sea, inside cars, and among building wreckage. Landslide-damaged roadways are complicating rescue efforts. Various countries, including Germany, Romania, and Finland, have sent equipment, basic materials, and blankets to the rescue operation. The European Union also provided 500,000 euros.
