Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said grocers would soon adopt measures to stabilize food prices in Canada, including price freezes, pantry item discounts, and other campaigns. Minister announced initial plans advanced by grocers Loblow's, Metro, Empire, Walmart, and Costco. The government promises to implement discounts on the prices of staple food products.
The minister clarified that this is only the beginning of many measures. The minister also informed that a grocery task force will be formed to monitor monthly in the consumer affairs office. The federal government last month asked Canada's major grocers to come up with a plan to stabilize prices. He also warned that if he is not ready for this, he will face the consequences.
