According to media reports, Canada's grocery stores have failed to reply to the federal government's proposal to stabilize grocery prices in order to curb food price increases. François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Industry, announced preliminary price-stabilization proposals. This includes reductions, price freezes, and so forth. The minister had regularly cited pricing regulations in France, the United Kingdom, and other countries as models for grocers to emulate. However, major supermarket retailers such as Loblow, Empire, Metro, Costco, and others have not responded. Meanwhile, a Walmart Canada spokesman stated that the company will continue to sell food at lower prices every day. Walmart Canada has stated that it will take initiatives to combat inflation and cut costs.
