Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly announced the withdrawal of 41 diplomats amid tensions between Canada and India following the execution of Khalistan Wadi commander Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Out of a total of 62 personnel, Canada withdrew 41 personnel and their families. Melanie Jolly slammed India's absurd demand for diplomatic equality. Jolly further mentioned that only 21 ambassadors and their families are permitted to maintain diplomatic status in India. India has asked that 41 Indian officials leave by October 20. Canada has also recalled diplomatic representatives and closed some embassies and consulates in India. Canada has recently updated its travel advice for Canadians visiting India.
Jolly chastised India for violating international law. Joly charged India with violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and inflaming bilateral tensions.
