Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is said to have designed social media platforms with children in mind. Millions of complaints about underage users have been received by Instagram.
However, only a subset of these accounts are said to be active. This followed the release of a redacted version of the complaint filed at the end of October by the attorneys general of 33 US states. At the same time, media reports state that META officials admitted in the complaint that the platforms were designed to exploit the weaknesses of teenagers and young adults, such as impulsive behavior, vulnerability to peer pressure, and underestimating risk.
Facebook and Instagram are undeniably popular with children under the age of 13. According to company policy, children of this age are not permitted to use this service. However, the complaint claims that Meta is attempting to attract them by designing for them.
