Calgary City Council has extended the secondary suit amnesty program until 2026. Members of the City Council unanimously voted to extend the program, which waives development permit and registration fees for secondary suites, until 2026. Brenda Desjardins, Director of Development Business Building Services, stated in a statement that the number of safe and legal suits registered with the City has increased significantly since the program's inception in 2018. As stated by Desjardins, there are currently over 11,000 suits in the registry.
A secondary suite is an additional living space built into a home. A secondary suite is frequently found in the basement. It will have a bedroom, a kitchen, and a bathroom. According to the city, secondary suites are permitted in most low-density residential districts.
