Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe extended amnesty to over 1000 offenders.

 

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe offered amnesty to over 1,000 convicts, releasing them from prisons around the country in time for Christmas. Those released include those who were imprisoned for failing to pay overdue penalties.

The new pardon comes after police detained over 15,000 individuals during a week-long military-backed anti-drug operation that was called off on Christmas Eve. According to a police statement, 13,666 suspects were arrested, and 1,100 slaves were imprisoned and transported to an army-run camp for forced rehabilitation.
