The federal government reportedly wants to compensate Canadians who are detained in China.

According to official sources mentioned in the media, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, two  Canadians who were detained in Chinese jails three years ago, are anticipated to receive multi-million dollar compensation payouts from the Canadian government. They were both imprisoned in 2018.The Canadian government has contributed approximately $3 million each.

 According to the source, compensation settlement negotiations are still ongoing with both sides, and financial settlements are expected to be completed early in 2019.Spavor and Kovrig were detained and imprisoned by China shortly after Canadian authorities arrested Meng Wanshu, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies, a Chinese telecom corporation, on the basis of a US warrant.
