Winnipeg police have verified the death of an international student.

A lawyer has released details about a man who was shot by Winnipeg police on New Year's Day. Afolabi Stephen Opaso (19), a foreign student from Nigeria studying at the University of Manitoba, was killed, according to lawyer Jean-René-Dominique Quilu. 

The shooting occurred about 2.20 p.m. on December 31.After receiving information about a person generating a terroristic atmosphere, police responded to an apartment suite in the 100 block of University Crescent.Three persons were discovered in the suit, according to investigators, and the 19-year-old was in possession of knives. One of the policemen fired during the interaction. According to the police, he was admitted to the hospital with significant injuries but died. The other two people in the suit reported no injuries.
Meanwhile, Oposo's counsel stated that he was mentally ill.
