China is accused of exploiting Canada's electric vehicle aspirations and domestic auto industry. Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association, accused the government of failing to consider whether many of the electric vehicles coming to Canada are manufactured in Canada or imported from China.

Volpe believes the national objective of selling 100 percent zero-emission vehicles by 2035 will not be attained, which is why he reached this decision. "This is a very bad omen for Canadian industry and Canadian interests," the prime minister warned.

Wolpe and other analysts worry that China may win at the price of Canada's auto industry, with unexpected implications for the country.
