Immigration Minister Mark Miller said the decrease in the number of study permits for Indian students in 2023 was due to a diplomatic dispute between Canada and India. In an interview with a news agency, he also revealed that he believes the number of study permits for Indians is unlikely to increase anytime soon.

He said only half of study permit applications from India are being processed now. He clarified that it is not possible to say how the situation in diplomatic relations will move forward and that it is a challenge for students to reach the country in a big way. Students arrive in Canada uncontrollably. This needs to be reduced. There will be a move to halve the number of international students. He added that these things will be started in the first half of this year.
