The Alberta government plans to declare a water emergency in the province after three years of drought and water shortages have led to a terrible situation. The province is below average. Water levels in many rivers are at record lows. The water level in the reservoirs is below capacity. There are currently 51 water shortage advisories across the province because Southern Alberta is experiencing severe water shortages. This is a warmer than average winter in Alberta. Therefore, the weather forecasters warn that there is a high chance of severe drought in the province this year.

Exacerbating the problem is El Niño, which creates warm, dry winters across Canada. More than 70 percent of the country's regions are currently facing drought.
