Uniform Civil Code proceedings initiated in Uttarakhand; The report will be handed over to the government on February 2

The Chief Minister announced that the Unified Civil Code will be passed in the upcoming assembly session in Uttarakhand and the steps for this have started and the committee appointed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to prepare the draft will hand over the report to the government on February 2. Uttarakhand is the first state to announce the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and start the process. The Uttarakhand Assembly will meet on February 5 to discuss the bill. A three-member committee was appointed in May 2022 under the leadership of former Supreme Court judge Ranjan Prakash Desai. After Uttarakhand, the bill may be discussed and passed in Assam and Gujarat.

Uniform Civil Code is implemented with the aim of gender equality, equal right to property etc. The Supreme Court had sought the opinion of the Law Commission to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country. The Law Commission is all set to submit its final report to the Union Home Ministry. The Law Commission had earlier sought the views of states and various organizations on the matter.
