The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about online scams through Facebook Marketplace. Police say that since May 2023, more than 40 scams related to online purchases of Apple and Samsung products have been reported. Fraudsters sell fake phones and watches online as new products from major companies.

Chapman Lee, an officer with the EPS Southeast Investigative Response Team, says there has been a huge increase in online marketplace fraud over the past three months. Lee said they urge anyone looking to buy an electronic device through the Facebook marketplace to make sure the product is legitimate and be careful.

Check the profile of the person selling the products to make sure they are genuine. Certain safety precautions should also be taken when using something like a marketplace. The police warned that it is advisable to choose public places to exchange the product and the place with CCTV camera will ensure more security.
