The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court ruled that socially advanced backward class sub-castes can be exempted from reservation. Justice Vikram Nath, a member of the Constitution Bench, opined that the living conditions of a person who gets a higher job through reservation is improving and the sub-castes who have progressed in this social context should compete with the general category. The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court is hearing a plea on whether state governments can introduce sub-reservations in admissions in educational institutions, government jobs and reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
