Government to eliminate annual registration of license plates in Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced that drivers will not have to re-register their cars. He also clarified that the new changes will come into effect soon. Ford's announcement follows the discovery that more than one million license plates are currently out of date in the province.

The Ford government has waived all fees associated with the annual registration of license plates in 2022. Renewal of license plates for passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds is free in the province. These vehicles do not require a license plate sticker. License plate sticker fee refund checks are available till March 13, 2024.
