Canada's Immigration Minister Mark Miller has warned that post-secondary education institutions abusing the International Students Program will be shut down. Mark Miller said there are problems throughout the college sector, but some private institutions are the problem. He clarified that the solution to the problem is to close those institutions.

He said provinces have an obligation to address issues in the post-secondary sector with regard to international students. But if they do not do that, the federal government will take strict action, he added.

There has been a sharp increase in foreign student enrollment in the country. A record increase in international students at post-secondary institutions has also drawn criticism. Some have been accused of using the International Students Program as a back door to permanent residency. With this, it was decided to limit the new study permits.
