Scientists believe that there is a huge ocean hidden under the earth. 700 km below the earth's surface is water like reservoir. The water is stored in rocks known as ringwoodite. Researchers say that this subterranean ocean contains three times more water than all the oceans on Earth. The discovery was made by researchers at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Scientists were searching for the origin of water on earth. These findings are explained in the paper 'Dehydration Melting at the Top of the Lower Mantle'. This paper also talks about the characteristics of blue colored ringwoodite rocks. Ringwoodite is like a sponge that absorbs water. Ringwoodite has a crystal structure that can attract hydrogen and hold water, said Steve Jacobsen, a geophysicist on the research team.
