Flu deaths in Alberta: highest in 15 years reported

Alberta reports record number of flu deaths for 2023-24 flu season This is the highest rate recorded in 15 years, according to provincial figures. Health experts have pointed out that the decline in vaccination rates has contributed to the rise in the death toll. According to data from the province's Respiratory Virus Dashboard, the number of lab-confirmed influenza cases during the respiratory virus season that began last fall was 15,215. Currently, 42 people are in hospital and three are in the intensive care unit due to influenza.

So far, 167 influenza deaths have been recorded in the 2023-24 season. According to the data, one death was recorded between April 14 and April 20. Most of the dead were between the ages of 60 and 89.
