The federal government has announced that the working hours for international students in Canada will be increased to 24 hours per week. Federal Immigration Minister Mark Miller said the law would come into force from September as part of an effort to ease the labor shortage. Working hours will be limited to 20 hours per week until September. Working hours were reduced to 20 hours during the Covid pandemic. He clarified that the purpose of the International Student Program is to study and not to work.

The employment cap was imposed as the federal government controls the increase in international student enrollment across the country.
