India has responded to the recent RCMP arrests in the killing of Khalistan Wadi leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which has soured relations between Canada and India. Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded that Canada welcomes criminals from India and provides accommodation. S Jaishankar described the Khalistan organization as a violent movement of Sikhs who are trying to break away from India and form their own country.

The RCMP had charged three Indian nationals in the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. S Jayashankar's response is in this context. Jaishankar replied that Canada has given legitimacy to extremism, separatism and advocates of violence in the name of freedom of expression.

Jaishankar said he had inquired with External Affairs Minister Melanie Jolly about the attacks and threats against Indian diplomatic missions and personnel in Canada.
