Car theft claims up 59 per cent in Calgary

The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) reports an increase in auto theft claims in Calgary. Car theft claims in Calgary are projected to increase by 59 per cent from 2021 to 2023. IBC reports that it will rise from $20.8 million in 2021 to $33 million in 2023.

Alberta has seen a 55 percent increase in vehicle theft claims. Calgary ranks fourth in the province. Auto theft claims also increased in Medicine Hat (+72%), Edmonton (+66%), Fort McMurray (+60%) and Lethbridge (+30%).

The IBC reported that vehicle theft claims across Canada have risen 254 per cent over the past six years. Alberta ranks second in terms of the amount spent per claim on vehicle repairs and frequency of vehicle theft.
