Alberta's housing construction is reported to be on the rise. A record increase was recorded in May. Construction of more than 4,100 new homes started across the province last month, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. The government says this is Alberta's busiest month on record. A total of around 17,000 new units have been added so far this year.

In Edmonton alone, construction started on more than 1,200 homes in May. The figure was 518 during this period last year. More than 1600 houses are being built in Calgary.

The construction of houses is financed by the provincial and federal governments. Edmonton City Council recently approved a $170 million housing accelerator fund. Apartment units are mostly built. The government said in a press release that there has been an increase in demand for single-family units as well.
