The BC Conservation Officer Service said a man named Carmine Bruno had hunted and killed the grizzly bear. It was argued in court that he killed the bear for self-preservation. But during the investigation it was found that what Bruno said was a lie.

Although natives may hunt grizzly bears for food and ritual purposes, public hunting of grizzly bears is prohibited in BC.
