Fortis BC has announced that starting July 1, residential customers in the province will see a percentage of renewable natural gas included in their bills. Fortis BC says it has become the first utility in North America to automatically switch a portion of its residential customers' natural gas to RNG.
RNG is a non-fossil fuel form of natural gas. RNG is produced using methane, usually produced from landfills and agricultural waste. Although RNG is more expensive than conventional natural gas, it is more climate friendly. And using it requires no costly changes to transmission infrastructure or appliances. Fortis BC says the change will not result in an increase in bills for customers.
RNG will be included under the storage and transport line item in the bill. And customers will see carbon tax credit in the gas category and it will automatically convert to RNG, Fortis BC said.
