Statistics Canada reports that violent crime has increased across Canada since 2015. But the National Police Federation says this data only reports a fraction. The agency says the Violent Crime Severity Index remained virtually unchanged last year, largely due to a decrease in violent crimes such as murder. However, there was a seven per cent increase in violent crimes such as assault, robbery and extortion, according to the Statistics Canada report.
Meanwhile, the National Police Federation (NPF), which represents about 20,000 RCMP members, says the data does not fully reflect the true picture across the country. The NPF stated that the data has been prepared by portraying even the small crimes that are committed even in the small towns of the city. The NPF reports a slight decline in crime across the country.
But Statistics Canada shows that the overall crime severity index is expected to rise by two per cent in 2023. This marks the third consecutive annual increase. The non-violent crime severity index rose three percent last year, the agency said.
