Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala celebrates the country's 78th Independence Day. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hoisted the flag at Thiruvananthapuram Central Stadium. Independence Day celebrations were held in Thiruvananthapuram amidst heavy rain. The Chief Minister took the salute for the parade. In the wake of the Wayanad disaster, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in his Independence Day message that the state is deeply saddened and it is not enough to be worried and we have to survive.

In his Independence Day message, the Chief Minister said that weather warnings should be made effective. Accurate predictions are needed, not general warnings. Even in the 21st century, the country cannot predict natural disasters in advance. Even though there are achievements in the fields of science and technology, the protection of people's lives and property cannot be guaranteed. Apart from warnings, natural calamities can be prevented if there is accurate forecasting. Some people are trying to lead people into superstition and primitive rituals. The Chief Minister said that casteism and communalism are being used as weapons for this.

Chief Minister distributed medals for distinguished services and Jeevan Raksha Patak. Justina George from Kottayam Elamkat and Wilson from Nilambur received the Jeevan Raksha Patak. Celebrations were also held at district headquarters.
