According to reports, the political uncertainties and conflicts in Bangladesh have dealt a heavy blow to the Indian tourism sector. The number of people visiting India from Bangladesh has reduced significantly. India's tourism sector has been affected by disruptions in flight services in Bangladesh and reduced issuance of visas. Although the flight services have resumed, there are reports that almost half of the seats are empty. The crisis worsened two weeks ago when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. In view of this situation, a temporary ban has been imposed on flights between the two countries.

India is one of the most visited foreign countries by tourists from Bangladesh. 45 percent of those who go abroad come to India. 80 percent of them visit India for treatment. The rest come for shopping (15 percent) and vacations (5 percent). Most of the people who come for shopping visit Kolkata. Sikkim, North Eastern regions and Kashmir are also favorite places of Bangladeshis. Most Bangladeshis come to India during Durga Puja and wedding season.

43 percent increase in the number of Bangladeshis visiting India in 2023. During this period, the number of people coming to India for treatment increased by 48 percent. Bangladeshi patients generally arrive in cities like Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad. 9.23 million foreign tourists visited India last year. 22.5 percent of them are from Bangladesh. Visas for Bangladeshis are currently suspended. Exemption is given only to those with specific medical needs.
