80 and 100 were not for nothing, world's oldest grandmother, age 116

Tomiko Ituka from Japan holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest person in the world. This grandmother is 116 years old. A few days ago, San Francisco resident Maria Branias Moreira passed away at the age of 117.


Born on May 23, 1908, Itooka was officially 116 years old, according to the Gerontology Research Group. Since 2019, she has been living in a nursing home. Before that, Itooka lived at home with her daughters until she was 110 years old. Married at the age of 20, Ituka has two daughters and two sons. During World War II, Itooka was instrumental in managing her husband's textile factory.

After her husband's death in 1979, she lived in her hometown of Nara for about 10 years. This grandmother has the nature of always being energetic in life. In the 70s, she climbed Mount Nijo and summited the 3,067m Mount Ontake twice. At the age of 80, Ituka twice completed the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, a challenging route through 33 Buddhist temples. At the age of 100, Ashiya climbed the stone steps of the shrine unaided.

According to Gerontology Research Group records, in 2022, Tomiko Ituka became the oldest person in Hyogo Prefecture after the death of an unnamed 115-year-old woman.
She celebrated her 115th birthday in 2023, and two days later, she became the oldest person from Hyogo Prefecture. After Tatsumi Fusa's death on December 12, 2023 at the age of 116, Ituka was confirmed as the oldest living person in Japan and Asia.
