Population boom: Unemployment rises among newcomers to Alberta

 

Alberta's population is booming due to an influx of immigrants. The Alberta government says unemployment rates among newcomers to the province, especially among young people, are rising along with population growth. The government says that finding work in the labor market is creating a huge crisis among new immigrants. Rising unemployment rates discourage certain sections of the population from seeking employment.

And the government says in its economic statement that the labor force participation rate is much lower than expected this year, keeping the unemployment rate low. The unemployment rate in 2024 is projected to average 7.0 percent. An increase of 0.5 percentage points will be recorded from the budget. At the same time, the government points out that the unemployment rate will drop to 6.8 percent next year and the labor force will grow along with the growth in the employment sector.

According to the statement, unemployment among new immigrants in the province is increasing due to lack of credential recognition, language barriers and lack of Canadian work experience.
