Universities Canada says the enrollment rate for international students at Canadian educational institutions is below the threshold set by the federal government for international student visas this year. The Immigration Minister announced the cap in January to slow the rise in international student numbers.

The new policy is expected to reduce the number of student visas. It is estimated that there will be a 35 percent decrease in the number of students this year compared to last year. Meanwhile, Universities Canada president Gabrielle Miller said the impact of the change would be far-reaching and cause a huge financial loss to educational institutions.
