After becoming the country with the lowest birth rate in the world, South Korea is looking for ways to overcome the crisis. As part of this, working parents who have no one at home to look after their children can now hire nannies from foreign countries. As a first step, the government has granted visas to 100 Filipino nannies. Having no one to take care of children emerged as one of the main concerns among working parents, and the government decided to look for such a solution.
According to reports, South Korea has the lowest fertility rate in the world at 0.72 children per woman. President Yoon Suk Yeolin decided to bring foreign nannies to the country to work after the lack of people to look after their children was cited as the main reason why young couples do not want children. After the initial phase, the government plans to bring in around 1,200 foreign nannies by the first half of 2025, reports Hindustan Times.
However, hiring nannies from abroad is a major financial burden for Korean families. According to reports, Korean families spend 2.38 million won per month if they hire foreign nannies for 8 hours per day. This is about half of the average monthly income of Korean households. Therefore, the government is now looking for plans to reduce this cost.
