Paris: Former EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier is the new Prime Minister of France. This was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron. The decision comes after months of uncertainty. Macron announced that Michel Barnier had been tasked with forming a unity government.

With this, at the age of 73, Barnier became the oldest prime minister in the history of modern France. In a 50-year right-wing French political career, he has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Environment and Agriculture and twice as European Commissioner.

Barnier has previously said he wants to return to a leading role in French politics. In the meantime, Barnier has claimed that unrestricted immigration from outside the European Union is undermining France's sense of identity. Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally Party responded that her support for Barnier would depend on his policies.
