Calgary is changing its noise bylaw. The new change will see new fines imposed on drivers who honk excessively and make too much noise. This was a unanimous decision at the Community Development Committee meeting on Thursday. The council will also vote to include new fines for excessive vehicle noise and give traffic officers more discretion to levy fines.

Running the engine loudly, playing loud music in the vehicle or making noise by screeching tires may result in fines. Noise exceeding 96 decibels or 92 decibels while the vehicle is stationary can result in a fine of more than $270. Drivers who refuse to comply with a bylaw officer's direction during a noise test will also be fined $300.
