Survey report that crime is increasing in Canada. A new survey by Maru Public Opinion found that one in five think crime is the main problem facing the cities of Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver have the highest rates of drug-related crime, according to the survey report.
Opioid use has also increased sharply in cities across the country. This is also cause for concern. Between January and July, 1,365 people lost their lives to drug overdoses in British Columbia. Alberta is expected to record 2,000 substance abuse deaths in 2023, surpassing any other province's record. 660 in Calgary and 743 in Edmonton died from drug use.
Gun attacks and vehicle theft are major concerns in Toronto. Toronto has seen a significant increase in gun attacks this year. A 46 percent increase compared to 2023 and a 66 percent increase in deaths. A majority said that the city's police chiefs are working efficiently and taking strict action against crime. Calgary Police Chief Mark Neufeld has the best score. 77 percent said he is performing well.
