One person has died in Canada after contracting salmonella from reptiles. Three infected persons were admitted to the hospital. About 25 cases have been reported in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, the public health agency said.
The outbreak occurred between August 2020 and September 2024. Most of those affected are women, aged between one and 103 years. The investigation is ongoing. PHAC also reported that the number of cases is higher than what has been reported so far.
The PHAC says many of the infected individuals had direct or indirect contact with geckos or the environments where these pets were kept before becoming ill.
