Statistics Canada reports that the fertility rate in Canada will reach its lowest level in 2023. Canada's rate has been declining for more than 15 years and will reach a low of 1.26 children per woman in 2023. Compared to 2022, the number of children born in the country in 2023 was 351,477.
Figures from Statistics Canada indicate that British Columbia has the lowest fertility rate in the country. BC has a low birth rate of one child per woman. Last year, 41,268 children were born in the province. The agency points out that affordability in the province has contributed to the significant drop in birth rates.
Canada joins a list of countries with the lowest birth rates that includes Italy, Japan, Spain and South Korea as the fertility rate declines.
