The federal government is about to make changes to Canada's immigration system. The government announced the new plan amid calls from 30 Liberal MPs for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign. Reports indicate that several new measures will be in place in the coming years, including a reduction in the number of permanent residents Canada accepts and changes to temporary immigration streams.

Canada plans to accept 500,000 permanent residents by 2025. The target is to maintain a similar number in 2026. The number of permanent resident admissions has increased by 59 per cent on an annual basis since the Liberal government first came to power.
