Avian flu has been confirmed in pigs in Oregon, USA. This is the first time bird flu has been confirmed in swine in the United States. This points to the possibility of bird flu becoming a threat to humans in the future.
In Crook County, Oregon, the infection occurred on a farm adjacent to a home. Last week, the virus was detected in chickens at the farm. This week, one of the farm's pigs was found to be infected. Following this, the farm was quarantined and all five pigs were killed. Officials informed that as this is not a commercial farm, there is no concern regarding the distribution of pork across the country. USDA also conducts genetic tests on farm-slaughtered chickens. No genetic mutations have been found in the virus that could be transmitted to humans. The USDA stated that the public should not be concerned at this time.
Currently, the type A H5N1 virus infection has been detected. It has been found to spread widely in wild birds, chickens, cows and other species across the country. Therefore, there is a concern that it may spread to humans in the future
