Scurvy, a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C, has not completely disappeared from Canada, a report says. Saskatchewan recently reported 27 cases. Experts warn that the risk cannot be ruled out.
Experts say that people who are food insecure are at risk of the disease. The disease can be prevented through precautions. And those who are sick can be treated and cured. But without proper nutrition, a person can develop scurvy. Symptoms include bruising, gum disease, and tooth loss. In some cases, even death can occur. The risk of developing it is very low in people who follow a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and meat. All of these are good sources of vitamin C, said John Neary, associate professor of internal medicine, McMaster University.
