The number of Indians renouncing citizenship and settling abroad is increasing

The number of Indian citizens renouncing Indian citizenship and settling abroad is increasing, according to a report. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, about 1.75 million Indians applied to renounce their citizenship between 2011 and June 2023. Indians are migrating to 135 countries including Brazil, Iceland, Vatican, US, UK, France, and Germany.

Dual citizenship is not allowed under the Indian Constitution. This is why those who migrate to foreign countries are renouncing their Indian citizenship. The most people submitted documents for this in 2022. 2,25,620 people surrendered their Indian passports in 2022. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, there are 13 million Indian citizens living abroad. The UAE has the highest number of Indians. There are 35.54 lakh Indian citizens in the UAE. Other countries with large Indian populations are Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman.
