Anti-NATO protesters protest in Montreal demanding that Canada withdraw from the NATO alliance. The convention center where NATO delegates were meeting was also attacked. Police said protesters threw smoke bombs and created barriers with metal barricades. Two people, including a policeman, were injured in the clash.
Many cars were also burnt during the demonstration organized by various groups. Many people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Canada has also demanded to withdraw from NATO
The protest also held up Palestinian solidarity placards. Le Mouvement Québécois pour la Paix president Jad Kabbanji said Canada should not follow NATO's policy of earmarking a certain percentage of GDP for defense spending.
The protestors accused NATO of making unnecessary military interventions, which destabilize the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Without the weapons provided by NATO members like the United States, Israel's military operation in Gaza would not be possible. Kabbanji also said that the move to include countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union in the NATO alliance prompted Russia to attack Ukraine.
