Washington: News is coming out that Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who has been on the International Space Station for months, has now started farming in space. It is reported that Sunita Williams is farming spinach in space. Sunita Williams is cultivating a vegetable called chira, a type of lettuce, on an experimental basis.
NASA has released information that Sunita's spinach farming in space is not for food. It is clear that Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita is conducting an experiment to find out how much water content affects plants in low gravity. NASA says that this will be an experiment that will benefit both future space projects and the agriculture sector on Earth. NASA explains that according to the results of the experiment, new farming methods can be implemented on Earth as well.
The experiment is being conducted to see how moisture levels affect plant growth and how much the amount of nutrients in them changes. This experiment will also clarify whether farming in space is possible.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the space station in June 2024 on a Boeing Starliner spacecraft for an eight-day mission. However, they were stranded when the Starliner spacecraft failed and they could not return. NASA says they will be able to return by February 2025.
