Seoul: President Yoon Suk-yeol has lifted the emergency martial law declared by South Korea following widespread protests. The military emergency was declared in South Korea on Tuesday night, escalating tensions between South and North Korea. The martial law was lifted within 6 hours of the law being declared. The military surrounded the parliament at night after the declaration of martial law.

This led to major protests. Amid the political drama that followed, members of parliament voted to reject military rule. Martial law was lifted after the protests intensified. Yoon Suk-yeol stated that the government had withdrawn the deployed soldiers and that martial law would be lifted and officially decommissioned after the cabinet meeting. He then issued an order to lift martial law.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a military emergency in the country in an urgent national address on YTN television on Tuesday night, vowing to eliminate “shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces.” He said the opposition was biased towards North Korea. Yoon Suk-yeol argued that the opposition was trying to overthrow the government by forming a parallel government and was organizing anti-state activities to this end, and that a coup d’état should be implemented to counter this.
