Calgary’s municipal workforce has reportedly increased in recent years. The city’s administrative staff has grown by about 17 per cent by the end of 2022. Calgary is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The increase in staff has been driven by an increase in demand for services.
As of December 31, 2022, there were 13,483 municipal employees. However, this had increased to 15,751 by September 30, 2024. According to the budget passed last month, property taxes were increased by 3.6 per cent. This has raised more questions about the municipality’s revenue and expenditure figures. The number of employees was increased in 2023 as a result of the merger of the Calgary Parking Authority with the city and hiring in Calgary Transit and recreational and social programs. In 2024, the Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Transit, Emergency Management and Community Safety Department saw the most hiring. Within the next ten years, Calgary's population is expected to reach two million. This rapid growth will also increase the demand for city services. City officials said that as part of this, more employees will need to be hired.
