Ontario will introduce tougher penalties for drunk driving and car theft this year. The province's new law will impose tougher penalties for drunk driving and drug-related offenses.

The Safe Roads and Communities Act, which became law in November, provides for the indefinite suspension of drivers' licenses for reckless or dangerous driving. It also increases the penalties for convicted car thieves. The law also allows courts to prohibit drivers from using drugs or alcohol in their systems. Transport Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the new law will improve road safety in Ontario.
