Delhi: Although the HMPV virus that broke out in China was first discovered in 2001, a vaccine has not been developed even after 24 years, according to a report. According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is an RNA virus belonging to the Pneumoviridae family and the Metapneumovirus genus. In 2001, the virus was first discovered by Dutch experts in nasopharyngeal aspirate samples of children with respiratory infections caused by unknown pathogens.

It has been around for at least 60 years and has been reported as a common respiratory pathogen in many parts of the world. According to the academic medical center Cleveland Clinic, there are currently no antiviral drugs that treat metapneumovirus.

The China CDC website does not mention any vaccination for the virus. The medical portal noted that the infected person should maintain a healthy lifestyle and remain in a good mood. It also says that wearing a mask when going to crowded places, frequent hand washing, ventilation, and scientific disinfection can help combat HMPV infection.
