Canada is seeing a rise in norovirus cases, with health experts warning that the elderly and young children are most at risk.

Norovirus has become the second-most common illness in Canada and the United States after COVID-19, says Dr. Zain Chagla, an infectious disease specialist at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton. He says the disease is more common in the winter months. According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, the disease is most common in the winter and early spring, when people spend more time indoors. Symptoms of norovirus include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and nausea. The disease is usually spread through close contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces.
