The British Columbia government has announced the launch of a short-term rental registry in the province. Listings on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo will require any short-term rental operating in BC, including hosts operating outside of the province, to be registered with the principal-residence requirement. To register, hosts will need to complete an online application form.
Hosts will also receive a provincial registration number that will be displayed on all online listings, effective May 1, 2025. Listings of those who do not comply with the law will be removed from June 1, 2025.
Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon said that this is part of a plan to provide more long-term homes to people. Hosts who operate according to the rules will be able to operate legally and welcome guests. He said that this will allow strict action to be taken against speculators who violate the rules and give a blow to their actions.
The government said that hosts will get a 50 percent discount if they register by February 28 and a 25 percent discount if they register by March 31.
